Malnad — literally 'hilly region' in Kannada — is where the Western Ghats rise in all their glory. A vast, emerald landscape of coffee and cardamom estates, roaring waterfalls, mist-shrouded peaks and untamed wildlife.

This is India's coffee country. Chikmagalur is where Baba Budan brought the first coffee beans to India in the 17th century. Today the hills are thick with Arabica and Robusta, and the air always smells of something wonderful.

Best Time to Visit

November to March is perfect — coffee harvesting season (Nov–Jan) is magical. Monsoons (June–Sept) make the waterfalls spectacular but roads can be challenging. Mullayangiri trek is best November–February.

Getting There

Chikmagalur is 5 hrs from Bengaluru by road. Shivamogga is well connected by train and bus. Agumbe is 90 km from Shivamogga — best reached by hired cab. No major airport nearby.

3 days minimum for Chikmagalur alone (trek + estate + town). 5–6 days covers Chikmagalur + Shivamogga + Jog Falls. A full week includes Agumbe and Kudremukh for serious nature lovers.
